The first leg of the round of 1/8 Champions League 2019-20 took place on February 26, ended with a 1-1 draw. Napoli was a better team, but they were equalized and disadvantaged in the rematch at the Nou Camp.
Mertens opened the scoring for Napoli after a beautiful finish. Griezmann then equalized 1-1 to prevent Barca from failing at San Paolo.
In this match, both teams entered the game later than expected. That makes UEFA punish two teams for affecting television rights.
Accordingly, both teams were fined 15,000 euros for late game. Particularly, the Napoli owner was also fined another 12,000 euros, when the audience showed a laser on the visitors’ face.
The return match between the two teams was scheduled for March 19, but was canceled due to the effects of Covid-19. UEFA itself has not determined when the Champions League will play again.
Apart from the Champions League and Europa League, all European leagues have to be postponed. Today, UEFA will meet online with 55 member federations of Europe, to rearrange matches, analyze the development of European leagues and national teams.
In addition, UEFA also reconsider issues related to the clubs as well as the transfer deadline when the European schedule is disturbed.
Because matches cannot take place, many European clubs are badly affected by financial problems. Both Barca and Napoli called on stars to reduce wages to help the team overcome the difficult period during the Covid-19 period.
